Iris Idelette Spitzer was born October 22, 1935, to Edward and Loretta (Maier) Spitzer on the farmstead near Long Lake SD, where her dad was born and raised. Iris attended country school 1/3 mile north of her home, when the school closed Iris completed her education graduating in Long Lake and went on to teach at the school putting smiles on all the young student's faces.
On December 27, 1953, Iris married Robert Raymond Schumacher. In January 1954, Robert enlisted in the army, Iris joined "Bob" while stationed in Virginia and their first child Deborah Ann was born later that year. After Bob was honorably discharged from the Army, Bob and Iris made their home on the family farm near Long Lake SD. During the first few years back on the farm, two additional children were born, Rodney Robert and Janice Jane. In 1965, Bob and Iris moved the family to Eureka SD where Iris was employed by Eureka Hospital and Clinic. Bob and Iris purchased the Mobile Service Station in Eureka, and Iris later attended Presentation College graduating in 1974 with a nursing degree. Taking care of people was Iris's passion and she was a wonderful and caring nurse!! Bob & Iris moved to Spearfish where Iris worked at Look Out Memorial Hospital, later in 1978 they moved again this time to Linton, ND where both Bob & Iris were employed at the Linton Hospital and Iris as a surgical tech. Bob & Iris were not done moving yet, in 1979 they purchased the MoRest Motel in Mobridge SD, until selling the motel and purchasing several rental properties. In 1999, Bob & Iris set up a homestead in Tolstoy, SD and joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Iris continued her nursing duties including a paramed examiner for life insurance companies, while working at the Mobridge Regional Hospital until retiring in 2003 to take care of Bob after he suffered a stroke. In 2006, Bob entered the Hoven Nursing Home, Iris came out of retirement and proceeded to continue her nursing career employed at Hoven Nursing Home until closure in 2011. After Bob's passing in Sept 2008, Iris continued to keep busy working for both the Faulkton and Bowdle Nursing homes, until she decided to sell the property in Tolstoy and move to an apartment in Mobridge April of 2017. Iris, always needing to keep busy, went back to work for Mobridge Regional Hospital until her retirement at age 83, and over 50 years in the nursing profession. Iris entered the Walworth County Care Center in December 2021. Iris was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. Iris's faith was very important to her, daily devotions, singing God's word, and starting the "Gospel Messengers", a group of singers Bob and Iris organized to present gospel programs at local nursing homes for 25 years. Iris's kind heart, wonderful caring spirit, and devotion to the Lord was a tribute to her Christian life.
