CARBONDALE – Irmalee Alta Smith, age 88, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
Alta was born in Elco, Illinois on December 30, 1937 to Dwight Jackson “Lark” and Mary Lillian (Schilling) Betts. She married Graydon “Smitty” Smith on May 30, 1956 in Corinth, MS. He preceded her in death on October 12, 2024. They spent 68 years together making wonderful memories.
Alta dedicating herself to nurturing her family and creating a warm, loving home. She was known for her gentle spirit and her ability to see the good in everyone she met, never uttering a bad word about anyone. Her sweet nature radiated in everything she did, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Alta cherished her role as a mother and was a doting grandmother to her beloved grandchildren. Her love for family extended beyond mere affection; she provided a refuge of joy and comfort, especially for her children and grandchildren who were her pride and joy.
In addition to her family responsibilities, Irmalee found tranquility in tending to her indoor plants. This passion brought her joy and serenity, reflecting her nurturing spirit and love for life’s simple pleasures. Alta’s legacy will live on through her family and the countless lives she touched during her journey. Her kindness, warmth, and gentle wisdom will be deeply missed. Her faith was a guiding light, and she shared her faith and love openly with all those around her. She loved the Lord and spent time in his word and time in prayer for all of her children, grandchildren, and many others.
She is survived by her son, Benjamin (Susie) Smith; daughter, Treena Wicoff; grandchildren, Brittany (Austin) Allgaier, Nathan (Betsy) Smith, Stephanie (Chris) Wicoff, Tyler (Lacey) Smith, Abbie (Brice) Ott, Johnny (Tiara) Wicoff, Jacob Smith; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Gold; brothers-in-law, Rodney Smith and Mike Smith; and sister-in-law, Vicky Jo Baker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Smitty; parents; and thirteen siblings.
Funeral Services for Alta will be at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at the Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale with Pastor Mark Sims officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Dongola. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until the time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
