Irving M. Deitch

Irving M. Deitch, 99, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Irving was born on June 4, 1923, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Herman and Edith (Meyerowitz) Deitch. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beth Deitch, who passed on January 11, 2008, after 60 years of marriage and a niece, Nina Hower (Ross).
Irving is survived by his three sons, Steven, Andrew (Dr. Jodi Brown), and Anthony, and grandsons Adam Deitch, Zachary Deitch, Brandon Weaver and Jade Soward (Autry). In addition to his children and grandchildren, Irving is survived by his sister Shirley Ross, niece Ellen Ross and nephew Michael Ross.
Irving attended Harrisburg Academy and graduated from William Penn High School, where he played basketball. He met Beth when they both attended Penn State and later graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B.S. in Pre-Med. Irving is a World War II Army veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in the Philippines under General MacArthur. After returning home, he co-founded Irving Shoes, Inc., and as CEO led the company's expansion throughout Central PA. In 1977, Irving Shoes received the "Retailer of the Year" award from the National Retail Federation. Irving served on the boards of Susquehanna Employment and Training Corporation, Tri-County Easter Seals Society and the American Cancer Society. He was a lifelong member of Beth El Temple.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the Beth El Cemetery Chapel, 1100 South Progress Avenue, Harrisburg. Rabbi Ariana Capptauber will be officiating the service. Following the committal service, friends and family are invited for shiva until 3 pm at 1808 York Lane, Harrisburg. Shiva will also be held there on Sunday, June 4, from noon until 4 pm. Memorial contributions can be made, in honor of Irving, to the charity of your choice. The Hetrick Bitner Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the care and arrangements for Irving.
