J. Timothy Hanly, 81
1944 - 2025
Lynn - J. Timothy Hanly, 81, of Lynn Massachusetts passed away peacefully after a short illness.
Timmy, as he was known, was born on January 20, 1944, in Lynn, the son of John and Margaret Hanly (Horgan). He graduated from Saint Mary's High School and went on to Saint Anselm College, graduating in 1965. He further received his master's degree in education in 1969 from Boston State College.
Tim was consecrated Brother Finbar, C.F.X as a Xaverian Brother in 1965 and served for 10 years. During his time as Brother Finbar, he taught at Notre Dame Junior Senior High School in Utica, NY. After leaving the order, he taught at Peabody High School where he served as a Guidance Counciler and retired in 2001 after decades with the Peabody School System. Timmy also served as the Cross-Country Coach for several years.
Timmy was elected to the Peabody Municipal Lighting Commission in the late 1970's and sat on the PMLC until 1980. Tim was a communicant of several local churches during his life including St. John the Evangelist in Swampscott, St. Mary's in Lynn and St. Ann's Parish in Peabody
Buying cars, skiing and playing golf were lifelong passions for Tim. He caddied as a child and played golf as far as Ireland. He spent many winters skiing Attitash Mountain in North Conway, NH. Tim owned over 25 different cars through the years, often surprising his friends and family when arriving in a new one.
Timmy is survived by his sister Katherine Briggs (Hanly) and brother Peter Hanly and his wife Kathy Hanly (Aloia) along with nieces and nephews Megan Gibeau (Briggs), Andrew Briggs and his wife Kristen Briggs (Noren), Colleen Hanly, Elizabeth Forth (Hanly) and her husband Brad Forth, Brian Hanly, Kelly Walsh (Hanly) and her husband Ryan Walsh. He was Great Uncle Timmy to Caitryn Gibeau, John and Zoey Briggs, Forrest and Beatrice Forth, and Carter and Blake Walsh.
Preceding Tim in death were his parents John and Margaret Hanly and brother-in-law John Briggs of Lynn.
Service Information: His visitation will be on Monday, December 22, 2025, in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn from 10AM-12PM, with a funeral service beginning at 12PM. Interment will follow at St Joseph's Cemetery in Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
