J. Max Kilpatrick

Funeral services for J. Max Kilpatrick will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 2 p.m. from McClain-Hays Chapel with Bro. Chris Vowell and Bro. Mack Alford officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 10 a.m. until service time at McClain-Hays Funeral Home.
Johnnie Max Kilpatrick, warmly known as J. Max, left this world on December 10, 2024 at the age of 79.
Born on January 24, 1945, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, he exemplified a life dedicated to public service, family, and the pursuit of justice. J. Max graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1963 and furthered his education at Mississippi State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. His passion for justice led him to the University of Mississippi, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in December 1973. While attending law school, J. Max made significant contributions as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, beginning in January 1972. Upon graduating, he returned to his hometown to establish a private law practice, balancing this with his commitment to legislative service, where he served two terms. He held various esteemed roles throughout his career, including District Attorney for the 8th Judicial Circuit Court District and attorney for the Neshoba County Board of Supervisors for many years. He also dedicated six years as Chancellor for the Sixth Chancery Court District before resuming his private practice, where he served as a Referee for the Kemper County Youth Court until his retirement on June 30, 2022. His dedication to public service was further exemplified by proudly serving in the Mississippi National Guard, retiring with the rank of Major after 26 years. J. Max embraced life with enthusiasm. He enjoyed practicing law, hunting, attending races at Talladega Superspeedway, traveling, spending time at the beach, and proudly supporting the Ole Miss Rebels. Above all, he treasured the moments spent with his family, building lasting memories together.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy House Kilpatrick; his children, Kim Kilpatrick Rea (John), Amy Kilpatrick Taylor (Mark), and Jay Max Kilpatrick (Shelly); and his stepson, Jarrod Bates. A proud grandfather, J. Max leaves behind seven grandchildren: Austin Rea (Karington), Mary Grace Rea, Peyton Rea, Ayden Kilpatrick, Emma Taylor, Kathryn Kilpatrick, and Maggie Taylor, along with one great-grandchild, Maddox Rea. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Kilpatrick Kitchens (Allen), his sister-in-law, Peggy Kilpatrick, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Desma Kilpatrick, and his brother, Gerald Kilpatrick.

J. Max will be remembered fondly by those he encountered along his journey. His legacy of dedication, compassion, and steadfast commitment to serving his community will continue to inspire us all.
