Jack Boyd Obituary

Published by Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home South on Oct. 7, 2017.
The world lost an incredibly kind, giving, brilliant, talented, funny, passionate man this past weekend. Jack Boyd, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend to many people over the years passed away peacefully on October 7, 2017 at the age of 82. Jack was born in the small Texas town of Cisco on March 13, 1935. He moved to Odessa at a young age where his childhood played out like a Little Rascals episode in the oil fields. Jack loved telling stories about the adventures of his neighborhood gang. Music was also a big part of his life. Jack attended Odessa High School where he was first chair trombone, a member of the marching band and an All-State trombonist. He worked two jobs to put himself through the University of Texas and attended Baylor Medical School in Houston. Jack met Nancy, the love of his life, during medical school while working at the VA Hospital in Houston. After they were married, he served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force. He went on to be named Captain and head of the hospital at George Air Force base in California. Jack and Nancy moved back to Houston where he did his residency in Radiology and ultimately, his fellowship at MD Anderson. In 1969, they moved to Austin where they raised their four children – Cheryl, Lisa, Diana and Bryan. A Radiologist in Austin for 36 years, Jack was the Chief of Radiology at Radiology Consultants at Brackenridge and then joined Austin Radiological Association. He retired from practicing medicine in 2005, was a member of the Texas Radiological Society, the USGA and the Longhorn Foundation. Jack had a passion for all things Longhorn. He was an avid Longhorn basketball and football fan and a season ticket holder for over 40 years. Jack followed the "come early, be loud, stay late and wear orange" rule religiously. He was a great sportsman with a love for fishing, bowling and golf. A member of Lost Creek Country Club for years, Jack played in and won numerous tournaments and plenty of "sandies" and "greenies" bets off his golf buddies. He also loved traveling with his wife, children and friends. Over the years, Jack and Nancy took road trips, ski trips, cruises and trips to Europe. His life was filled with fun and he loved spending time with friends and family. Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Lory and Hazel Boyd; sister, Emily Hugg Holmberg; and brother, William Boyd. He is survived by his wife Nancy; his daughter, Cheryl McPhail, daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Chris Bennett, daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Mike Pochkowski; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Julie Boyd; grandchildren, Meredith, Ryan and Caroline McPhail, Layna and Collin Fultz, Vaughn and Dawson Boyd; sister, Patty Gage; sister-in-law, Joanne Boyd; numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 2:00 pm at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. A reception will immediately follow in Morris Hall.

Dear Nancy & family,
We were so sorry to hear of your loss . Our hearts go out to you all. It was such a fun evening not so long ago when both our families were gathered at El Rancho celebrating birthdays I think . We have lived away from Westlake for many years now but we have wonderful memories of our time there especially when our kids were in High School. We just never know what tomorrow will bring at this time in our lives but I know your memories of your life with Jack will never fade . We wish you well in the days to come .

Dear Nancy and Family,

I was so saddened to hear of Dr. Boyd's passing. He was such a good, kind, solid, man - full of integrity. A rock - yet such a soft hearted guy at the same time.

The thing I remember most about him from my years working at RC is how his face lit up when he spoke of you and your children. It was readily evident just how dearly he loved you all.

Bryan was still a cute little boy and Cheryl headed for college when I last spoke with him - the other girls not far behind. I'm sure they have all grown up to be wonderful, solid adults - just like their parents.

I will never forget him, his humor, and mostly - his kind soul.

My heartfelt condolences to you and yours.

Sincerely,
Sue Rausch

Dear Nancy and family,
We are so sorry to hear about Jack's passing. Jack was a valued member of the Austin Radiological Assoc. and leaves a great legacy both in the community and at work. We enjoyed hearing his golfing and travel stories. Our plans for a New Orleans trip were in the makings, but didn't get a chance to finish the planning at the last ARA Christmas party. Wonderful memories of Jack. Prayers and thoughts are with all the Boyd family at this time.
