Lifelong resident of Port Townsend, Jack passed away on May 30th at the age of 94. Born to Joseph L and Mildred A Guiher (Mart) at St Joseph Hospital.

Jack’s early years were spent growing up at the Guardhouse next to Battery Kenzie at Fort Worden where his Dad was stationed in the Army. A short duty relocation took the family to Fort Ward on Bainbridge Island then to Fort Flagler before returning to Port Townsend where the family settled in the North Beach area. Jack attended Port Townsend schools graduating with the class of 1949.

A proud Navy Veteran, Jack joined the Navy after high school becoming a hydraulics specialist working on Naval jets aboard carriers during the Korean conflict. After serving 4 years he remained in the Naval reserve serving another 8 years.

Upon his return to Port Townsend Jack was employed by the Crown Zellerbach Paper mill working as a rubber die engraver in the bag plant, later earning a mill wright position. He worked for the mill for a total of 35 years. His last few years of employment was working as a civilian employee at Indian Island. Jack served as a Volunteer Firefighter with the PTFD for 25 years and he also spent time as a Jefferson Co Fair Board member.

It was at the mill he began dating Carolyn Smith. The Smith and Guiher Families had known each other for many years. Jack and Carolyn married in August of 1959. They were married for almost 66 years. They had three daughters. The family spent many summer vacations camping, fishing or traveling to see family.

An avid gardener until the end Jack was known for his large vegetable gardens, especially his crop of artichokes. At the end of the season Farmer Jack hosted local preschool kids to run through his cornfields and pick a pumpkin from his pumpkin patch.

An all around skilled handyman and craftsman Jack built the family home in the 60’s then later built his garage. Woodworking became a passion over the years. He always had projects going. Later on he mastered the art of wood turning creating beautiful elaborate bowls and vases, many winning best in show ribbons at the fair.

His little yellow VW truck was seen almost daily at the Bayview Restaurant. There he became part of the Bayview family helping with projects at the restaurant. Sitting at the end of the counter he enjoyed his daily cup of coffee and the conversations he would have with staff and customers. After coffee he’d tour through town making his way through Fort Worden and then on to North Beach, making sure all was in order.

Jack will be missed by many. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughters Joyce Stockard (Rik) and Tammi Rigsby. Granddaughters Nina and Erin, three great grandchildren Odin, Kylie and Travis. His sisters Margaret Johnson and Dorothy Myers. Long time friends Tim Reandeau, Kelly Anthony and his Bayview family

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Debbie, son-in-law Dean Rigsby.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the PTHS Alumni Association Scholarship fund in his memory.
