NEW PORT RICHEY, FL -- Jack Lee Hangen, a man known and loved for his kindness, generosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and mentorship, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 4, 2023, in New Port Richey, Florida, with his devoted son, CJ, by his side.
Born on September 6, 1942, in Dayton, Ohio, Jack was the son of Charles and Evelyn Hangen (née Hansbarger). He grew up on his parents' farm, where, as a child, he was a member of the 4H Club, showcasing grand champion Red Poll Cattle in competitions across Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. He was a 1960 graduate of Franklin Monroe HS. After serving in the Army Reserve, Jack's ambitions called him to the vibrant scene of 1970s New York City, where he worked at Merrill Lynch. Through his community of friends, Jack was introduced to Southampton, New York, a place that would become synonymous with his name.
A pioneer in the Hamptons real estate scene, Jack founded Agawam Realty, contributing significantly to the success of many real estate professionals in the area. His ability to turn dreams into reality extended beyond business; he welcomed countless friends and family into his home on Post Crossing in Southampton – a consummate host who made everyone feel welcome. Jack had a natural gift for seeing the beauty and potential in everything and everyone.
In 1979, Jack faced the loss of his first partner, Kurt Poggemeyer. Fate intervened, and he found love again with Linda Thoman Fritz who became not only his partner in life, but also in business. Jack's love for cooking and hosting extended to his new life with Linda, with whom he also discovered a love for travel, skiing, and his newest role: fatherhood.
Tragedy struck again with Linda's untimely passing in 1993, but Jack's natural resilience and determination prevailed. He embraced life as a single father of two, and continued to lead Agawam Realty for nearly two decades before retiring to the Gulf Coast of Florida. Jack's love for the water guided his way, and he built a new community in New Port Richey where he became known yet again as a kind, generous man who cared for his friends deeply. Florida is also where Jack found the final love of his life and constant companion for almost 8 years: Eva, his beloved Manchester Terrier.
Throughout his over 40-year career, Jack hired and mentored many in the industry helping to launch some of the biggest names in real estate on the south fork of Long Island at the time. He was known, and will be remembered, for his honesty, integrity, creativity, and sense of humor.
Jack is survived by his children, CJ Hangen and Alison Fritz (Daniel Pohlig); grandchildren, Alex, Ben, and Maeve; sister Judy Ulrich (Barry); nieces and nephews Todd Ulrich, Mollie Watson (Brian), and Bill Ulrich (Shawna), as well as many cousins and countless friends. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Linda.
A memorial service will be held this spring at Agawam Park in Southampton, NY. Anyone wishing to extend personal remembrances can email: [email protected]. Jack L. Hangen leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and enduring memories. May he rest in eternal peace, close to the water he so dearly loved.
