Jack Sandon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Grandview Park Chapel on Nov. 7, 2024.
Jack Lee Sandon, 91, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Monday, November 4, 2024 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital with his family at his side. Jack was born February 13, 1933 in Des Moines to James D. & Opal E. (Keeney) Sandon.
Jack married his high school sweetheart, Mary E. Moe, on February 20, 1954 while still serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge he was a tool and die maker for the Maytag Corporation in Newton, Iowa for over 30 years.
Many summers were spent on the annual family vacation to a Minnesota lake. Jack loved to fish, however, that was secondary to pulling the children on water skis around the lake from dawn till dusk. The goal was to find crystal smooth water. As a couple, Jack and Mary enjoyed square dancing, boating, water and snow skiing.
One of Jack's favorite recent experiences was an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the Korean War Memorial.
Jack is survived by children, Michelle (Wayne) Thomas, Steve (Kristy) Sandon, Mark (Debbie) Sandon, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, parents James and Opal, daughter Carol Sams, sister Audrey, and brothers Richard and James.
Jack's family will greet friends at Iles Grandview Park Chapel, 3211 Hubbell Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50317, on Monday, November 11, 2024, from 10:00am till service time beginning at 11:00am. Burial with Navy Military Honors will follow at Highland Memory Garden Cemetery. Family and friends will then return to the Iles Grandview Park Chapel for a reception and visiting.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
