Jack Sawyers, 43, of Des Moines, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
Jack was born August 25, 1982, the son of Steven and Amy (Dorrell) Sawyers. He grew up west of Winterset on the family farm along Highway 92 and graduated from Winterset High School in 2001. He went on to attend Simpson College in Indianola, where he studied journalism. He made his home in Des Moines, where he spent his adult years.
Jack Andrew Sawyers was a renaissance man who loved family, friends, and providing for anyone he met. He enjoyed the arts, cooking, gardening, woodworking, and making people laugh, among many other activities with people he loved. Jack never knew a stranger and would give the shirt off his back to help if he could. His acts of kindness, memories and words will echo through time.
Jack was a loyal and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was truly one of a kind. Witty and deeply philosophical in his own right. He had the largest of hearts and could make you laugh at any moment in time. All of us will always look up to him as someone who lived by his own rules and accord, with his own freedom to be himself, which is something we should all inspire for in our own way, but many will never achieve. We are all grateful to have had the opportunity to know and love him.
Jack’s giving spirit continued even in his passing through the gift of organ donation. In one final act of generosity, he was able to help others in need, reflecting the same compassion and selflessness that defined his life.
He is survived by his parents, Steve (Melodie) Sawyers and Amy Sawyers; his brothers, Bryan Sawyers and Nicholas (Sofia) Sawyers; and his nephew, Levi Devine.
Jack was preceded in death by his grandparents, Carl and Dorothy Sawyers, and Ronnie and Betty Dorrell.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. A gathering of family and friends and a reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. at Redeemer Church in Winterset.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a future designation in honor of Jack.
