Jack Stroup Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 19, 2025.
Dr. Jack L. Stroup, 87, of Punta Gorda, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 13, 2025. He was an incredibly loving and well-loved husband, father, grandfather, and educator, and his final moments were spent surrounded by and laughing with his loved ones.
Born in LaFontaine, Indiana, on April 22, 1938, Jack grew up with a love for both academics and athletics. A proud Hoosier, he played basketball in the famed Hoosier Gym, as well as football and track during his high school years. He went on to Ball State University, where he continued playing college basketball and football, earning his degree in teaching and eventually his Doctorate, culminating in an incredible 47-year devotion to shaping young minds in public education across two states as a teacher, professor, and an administrator.
After retiring from education in Indiana, Jack and Mindy were married in 1985 and moved to Florida. His retirement, however, was outlived by his passion for education. Jack soon returned to teaching at Punta Gorda Middle School before serving as principal of East Elementary for more than two decades. Jack and Mindy celebrated 40 years of marriage together last month.
His commitment to students, staff, and families left an indelible legacy in every community he touched. He was a devoted husband, father of three, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always ready with a quick-witted joke, a silly story, or sage advice. He will be deeply missed as the cornerstone of his family.
Jack is survived by his wife, Mindy; sons James Christopher Stroup (Danica) and John Stroup (Jan); eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents (James and Millie Stroup); his brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Barb Stroup; his twin sister, who passed away at birth; and his beloved son, Larry Stroup.
A celebration of Jack's life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at NewLife Church, 507 W. Marion Ave., Punta Gorda, FL, officiated by his grandson, Pastor Seth Patterson.
Jack will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his deep kindness, his humor, and his commitment to public life. His influence will live on in the lives of countless students, colleagues, friends, and loved ones.
