Jimmy & David- Your dad hired me as a young faculty at KU microbiology department in 1978. Ever since, he was more or less my mentor guiding me through my tenure there for nearly 12 years. We had so many good memories together-having lunch in his tiny office, chatting about wide ranged topics. His management style as the department chair, his altitude toward scientific research, also his humor, generosity, independent ways toward life all became a model for me on how to handle my professional activities. Last time we met was in his apartment at Tacoma. I lost contact of him 5-6 years ago. Time flies and things change. But I will always miss him as a gentle good friend.

Jim and David - So sorry to hear about your dad. I'll remember him as the friendly, gentle father of my neighbors/friends/classmates. I found his interview about his teenage internment in Idaho very interesting. He was definitely a self-made man!

I grew up with Dr. Akagis“ younger son David. I have very fond memories of Dr. Akagi when visiting their home. Davis and I even visited him at his lab and he was so kind as he showed us around. RIP Professor. May your memory be a blessing to Jim, Davis and all that love you.
