On Wednesday, May 14th, 2025, James Francis Austin died peacefully at home in Jackson. James is the son of the late Francis and Helen Austin of West Pittston, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his loving wife Mary M. Flannery Austin his loving daughter Victoria H. Austin, his brother Michael (Maria), and nieces Tanya, Laura Beth, and Amy. James taught math at Hillside High School for many years, and he also taught at Rutgers and Kean University.
His love of jazz brought him to New Jersey, so he could be close to the Jazz scene in New York. James became such an expert in jazz that he often was on a jazz radio show from Cape Cod called WOMR. Old movies, the RED SOX and GOLF were also some things that James loved a great deal.
James is the descendant of Nathan Ely, who was a pilgrim and he and his friends founded the city of Hartford and also Norwalk, Connecticut.
During the last 15 years, Jim and his wife Mary have mentored numerous nuns from Vietnam and Africa. "His Girls" brought him much joy.

The viewing is on Sunday May 18th at the Moriarty Funeral Home, 76 Park Street Montclair from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be at Immaculate Conception Church, 30 North Fullerton Avenue, Montclair on Monday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m
