James Bambenek Obituary

James “Jim” Bambenek, of Winona, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 89. He was born on October 29, 1936, in Winona, Minnesota, to Lambert and Angela Bambenek.

A proud veteran of the Army National Guard, Jim dedicated over 44 years to Goodyear and later retired at the age of 85 from Motor Parts after 20 more years of work.

Jim was married to the love of his life, Elaine, for an incredible 69 years, tying the knot on April 21, 1956, at St. Stan’s in Winona. They shared a passion for camping, traveling, and dinning out. Jim and Elaine express a special ‘thank you’ to Bonnie Rae’s Café for the special treatment they received over many years.

During Jim’s earlier years, he was an avid deer hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed boating on the Mississippi with his family.

Jim was a proud member of the Elks Club, American Legion, VFW, and Knights of Columbus. He had the distinct honor of serving as the Exalted Ruler for the Elks.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Chris (Thor) Gernes and Tom (Sue) Bambenek; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Bambenek; grandchildren, Matt (Angie) Bambenek, Tracy Bambenek, and Holly Bambenek; step-grandchildren, Lacey (Shawn) Potter and Brittany (Tanner) Fabien; and 9 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lambert and Angela; children, Dan and Cindy; brothers, Bob and David; and great granddaughter, Olivia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at St. Stanislaus Basilica (625 E. 4th St. Winona, MN) at 11am with visitation beginning at 10am. Jim will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Winona at a later date.
