James Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peoples Funeral Home - Butler on Dec. 29, 2025.
James (Jim) A. Barnes, 80 of Butler, KY, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025in the home he built in the 70's. He was surrounded by the family he was so proud of and his loving wife of 59 years, Janet. Jim was born on August 5. 1945 in Kenton County to Roberta Webb Barnes and William "Buddy" Barnes, who preceded him in death along with a sister Judy Bramlage and a stillborn granddaughter.

He married his loving wife, Janet Daulton Barnes December 10, 1966, and together they raised three children Greg (Marsha) Barnes, Cindy (Guy) Grogan and Sharon Hannah. Grandchildren Felicia Burton, Brittany Morris, Kevin Barnes, Desirea Hart, Dakota Barnes and 8 great grandchildren with one on the way.

He considered himself to be one of the luckiest men to have all of them survive his passing. He had a deep unwavering love for his family, and his grandchildren were definitely a priority when they started coming along. After the first couple grandchildren were born, he and Janet gave up their winter home on Lake Okeechobee to be home with the grandchildren.

Jim was proud to have served in the United States Navy 1963 to 1966. He worked as an electrician at Proctor and Gamble in his younger years and gave that up to fulfill his dream of becoming a Kentucky State Trooper, serving in that compacity from 1976 until 1992. In that capacity he met his lifelong best friend and fellow trooper, Rob Elliott, who also survives his passing. His favorite hobbies were fishing, woodworking, and going to Tim's Kitchen to tell stories with other great friends like Mike Bowman, who also survives his passing. The highlight of his life was obviously his wife Janet and watching his family grow. He would do anything for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be dearly missed by his wife and all of them. You are 10-7, 502. Rest easy, we've got it from here.

Entombment will be held at 1pm, Monday January 5, 2026, at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North in Williamstown, under full military honors. Peoples Funeral Home will be caring for the family.
