James "Sonny" A. Bilbo, 82, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Born on November 14, 1942, in Lafayette to Joseph Alphonse and Alverta Lucille Massicot Bilbo. James Allen lived a life marked by service and devotion to his family.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, James Allen served with honor as a submarine sailor and achieved the rank of TM2. His time at sea instilled in him values of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. After his military service ended, he continued to contribute to the nation's defense by working as an electrician at the Navy Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.
James Allen was not only dedicated to his work, but also cherished being a father to two beautiful daughters: Marcel "Marci" Bilbo of DeRidder and of Port Orchard, Washington and Michelle Bilbo Rerecich of Poulsbo, Washington. He took immense pride in watching them grow into strong women who embody many of his own values-resilience and kindness among them. As a grandfather to Maya Bilbo and Dominic Rerecich; their laughter brought him immeasurable joy.
Family meant everything to James Allen; he shared countless memories with his sisters Kathy Bilbo Harding (and husband Jack) and Janet "Penny" Bilbo Wilson from Leesville. The bond they shared was unbreakable-a testament reflected through years filled with love and support for one another.
In addition to family ties that ran deep within him were passions that defined much of who he was: fishing trips where quiet moments turned into lifelong stories; woodworking projects crafted with care; evenings spent watching old westerns while sharing laughs over popcorn-all these simple pleasures painted the canvas of James Allen's rich life. His love of gardening was a joy that he passed to whoever was in need of a flower or a vegetable. His love James Allen was also nicknamed "YoYo" in the last five months by his daughter.
A devout Christian committed to serving others beyond himself-he found community within organizations such as VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and DAV (Disabled American Veterans). These affiliations allowed him not just fellowship but also opportunities for advocacy on behalf those who had served alongside him.
Visitation will be held on Monday morning December 23rd from 10 AM until the time of the service at noon at Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel located in DeRidder-with Pastor George Lee Glass officiating services honoring this remarkable man's legacy followed by military honors. Services will be live streamed on the funeral home Facebook page at www.facebook.com/labbymemorial. Burial at Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery will take place first part of January.
He is preceded in death by parents Joseph Alphonse & Alverta Lucille Massicot Bilbo along with sister Barbara Ann Thompson (husband Melvin) & brother-in-law Huey Wilson-each leaving behind echoes felt deeply amongst loved ones left behind yet forever grateful for having known such an extraordinary soul like James A. Bilbo whose spirit shall continue living through all those fortunate enough to call him family or friend alike-including honorary pallbearers Joey Durel, Jimmy Whittington,Jack Harding.
As we gather together during this difficult time-to celebrate both grief & gratitude-we remember how blessed we are because you walked among us dear James! Your light shines brightly still
