James Woodford "Woody" Black, Jr., age 79, of Sharkey, Kentucky, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 1, 2026, at UK–St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead, surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 10, 1946, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Woodford Black and Hazel Stidom Black. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Betty Irene Black, and a nephew, Jason Scott Hodges.

Woody is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sharon Cox Black, whom he married January 8, 1966; two special daughters, Tammy Gulley of Morehead and Dana Black Vise (Anthony) of Hillsboro; and a cherished grandson, Colten James "Coty" Gulley.

Other survivors include one brother, Tony Black of Morehead; three sisters, Shirley Cox (Bud) of Ringos Mill, Elaine Brown (Arvil) of Morehead, and Jo Ann Hodges (Leroy) of Hillsboro; several nieces and nephews; as well as extended family and friends.

Woody was a retired rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, dedicating 27 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

At the family's request, private visitation and funeral services will be held at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Richard Engle officiating. Burial will follow in Black Cemetery, 2190 Sharkey Road, Morehead.

Pallbearers: Anthony Vise, Ralph Cox, Leroy Hodges, Jr., Tony Black, Chad Black, and Andy Black.

Honorary pallbearers: Coty Gulley, Mark Gulley, Bud Cox, John W. Cox, and Arvil Brown.

Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
