Mr. James Wilson “Jimmy” Bowen, Jr., 76, of Elberton, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle for 30 years after suffering a brain injury and overcame many obstacles, but God had a better plan for him.
Jimmy was born on March 13, 1947, in Royston to James Wilson Bowen, Sr. and Mary Jo Ayers Bowen, who preceded him in death. He was a 1965 graduate of Elbert County High School and furthered his education at Truett McConnell College. He was a lifelong member of Rehoboth Baptist Church where he attended as long as he was able. He proudly read the Bible entirely several times.
Like his daddy before him, Jimmy was a self-employed carpenter by trade. He loved his work and worked faithfully until he had a tragic fall on April 20, 1993. He was a member of Philomathea Masonic Lodge #25. In his younger years, he enjoyed water skiing, fishing, and hunting deer, rabbit, and quail.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Eileen Flowers Bowen, to whom he married on October 10, 1969; son, Christopher ‘Paul’ Bowen of Elberton; daughter, Robin Flowers Warren (Aaron) of Bowman; son-in-law, Jarred Lunsford of Dewy Rose; daughter-in-law, Sarah Bowen of Palm Bay, FL; grandchildren: Hannah Louise Brown (CJ) of Elberton, Mary Grace Lunsford of Colbert, James Wyatt Bowen of Seneca, SC, Anna Jo Rachel Bowen of Seneca, SC, Alexandra Marie Bowen of Palm Bay, FL, Hadley Page Bowen of Palm Bay, FL, and Penelope Joy Bowen of Palm Bay, FL; great-grandchildren: Rielyn Grace Brown and Colton Thomas Brown, both of Elberton; siblings: Joan Bowen Mauldin of Bowman, Roger Bowen of Goldmine Community, Andy Bowen of Bowman, and Mark Bowen (Cindy) of Milledgeville; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his children: James Clinton “Clint” Bowen and Mona Anne Bowen Lunsford; and his favorite sister-in-law, Karen Flowers Phillips.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Tuesday, July 25, from 5:00-7:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Jimmy's life will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 11:00a.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Dr. Van Power, Rev. Tim Adams, and Mr. Jimmy Bryant will officiate.
Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his daughter. Pallbearers will include Kenyon Rice, Ronald Seymour, Denny Seymour, Aaron Warren, Jarred Lunsford, and Christopher Phillips.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to T.J. & Friends Foundation, PO Box 6161, Elberton, GA 30635 or to Gideons International.
