UPDATE TO SERVICES DUE TO WEATHER 

James Norman Braddock, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on January 4, 2026, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, at the age of 79. Born on January 24, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jim led a life marked by dedication and an unwavering commitment to his work and loved ones.

Jim was a prominent figure in environmental science, working with the Environmental Protection Agency as a Research Chemist and serving as the Group Head of Mobile Sources. His innovative mindset and practical skills enabled him to create various solutions that contributed significantly to the field.

A product of Perkiomen Prep School in Pennsburg, PA, Jim furthered his education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Delaware University. Subsequently, he earned a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina, showcasing his intellectual prowess and commitment to advancing his knowledge.

Jim's life was a testament to both his professional successes and his commitment to serving his country. A veteran of both the Army and National Guard, he achieved the rank of Captain before transitioning from the Guard, leaving a legacy marked by his military achievements and dedication to service. His experiences in the military shaped his character, instilling in him a sense of discipline and leadership.

Throughout his life, Jim was known for his sharp intellect, creativity, inventiveness, and resourcefulness. He had a remarkable ability to work with his hands, allowing him to build and create anything he set his mind to. His immense practical skills were a testament to his deep understanding of the world around him.

In his personal life, Jim shared 35+ wonderful years with his beloved partner, Betty Norwood Watkins Harris. Together, they built a life they loved, surrounded by family and friends. Jim is survived by Betty, her children- Leah Harris Johnson (Kevin) and Edwin H. Harris III, (Susan McMurray Harris) and Leah's children, Brian (Melanie McLaughlin Reznik), Holly, and Hannah Reznik. He also leaves behind cherished brothers, Lawrence "Larry" Braddock (Aurelia) and Dean Braddock (Patti), and a sister, Nancy Braddock Baillie. Furthermore, he will be remembered fondly by special friends, Alan and Linda Bell Schwager; as well as family and friends he impacted too numerous to name.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Fozzard Braddock and Margaret Norma Rennie Braddock, who laid the foundation for his achievements and nurtured his inquisitive nature.

A graveside service honoring Jim’s life will take place on January 31, 2026, at Meadowview Memorial Park in Oxford, North Carolina, beginning at 2:00 PM and officiated by Dr. Glenn Stallsmith. His family invites all who knew him to join in celebrating a life filled with remarkable contributions to science, strong family bonds, and an enduring legacy of creativity and strength.
