James Russell Brand

James Russell Brand, known affectionately as Russell, entered this world on February 5, 1958, weighing a memorable 10 pounds. Born to the late James and Martha Brand, Russell was the youngest of two, preceded in death by his beloved older sister, Beverly Brand.

Russell was a proud graduate of Shamrock High School, the Spirit of 1976. Many of his closest high school friends remained by his side until the very end, a testament to his lifelong loyalty and friendships. While Kay didn’t attend the same school, it was during high school that Russell met the love of his life. On April 16, 1977, he and Kay married young, and never looked back. Their love story spanned decades, marked by devotion, deep faith, and the kind of partnership that reflected Christ’s love for the Church. He lived his vows daily — not just through words, but in every action, sacrifice, and quiet moment of care.

Together, Russell and Kay raised four children: two sons who served as the bookends — Phillip (Ginny) Brand and Mark (Kellyn) Brand — and two daughters in between, Jessica (Phillip) Lee and Brittany Brand. They made their home on a farm in Emerson, where Russell delighted in farm life and the steady rhythm of raising animals and children. From cows and horses to chickens, pigs, goats, and honeybees, the Brand family farm was full of life — and always full of love.

Later in life, Russell stepped into a role that may have been his favorite of all — Grandpa. With eight grandsons (Lane, Clay, Rhet, Samuel, Seth, Luke, Tate and Cash) and two cherished granddaughters, Martha Kay and Caroline, Russell’s heart was full. His grandkids brought him immeasurable joy, and he gave them endless love in return. Whether telling stories, building forts, or just being present, “Grandpa” was always the best part of their day.

Russell lived a life of purpose, rooted in his unshakable faith. A faithful follower of Jesus, he would be the first to say that every blessing in his life came from God. A proud Christian, he knew that he was covered by the blood of Christ and saved by grace. Russell was a long-time member of Emerson Baptist Church, where he loved serving the church and wider community.

After retiring from his 41-year business, Atlanta Store Equipment, Russell found joy and fulfillment in a new role — as a school bus driver for Emerson Elementary School. He didn’t just drive a bus; he ministered from the driver’s seat. Russell taught secret handshakes, passed out Bibles, gave out Christmas gifts, and made each student feel special with his silly nicknames and kind heart. He poured love into every route, and the students loved Mr. Russell right back.

Russell’s family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this time. While our hearts are broken and we mourn the sudden loss of our husband, father, and grandfather, we hold tightly to our faith. Though we walk through the valley today, we trust that God is preparing a mountain — a greater view, a higher purpose — that will one day be revealed.

Russell Brand lived well, loved deeply, and served faithfully. He will be missed more than words can express, but we take comfort in knowing that his journey continues in the arms of his Savior.

While we mourn, we also know that Russell has finally heard words he so longed to hear…“Well done my good and faithful servant.”

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, May 1, 2025 from 5 PM - 8 PM at Emerson Church.  A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 11 AM at Emerson Church.
