James "Jim" Lee Bretag, 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Orange Beach, Alabama, on October 9, 2025. He was born on July 23, 1958, in Ottawa, Illinois, to James (Jim) John Bretag and Patricia (Myre) Bretag, who later became Patricia Bramel.
Jim's life took him across the country - from Illinois to California and ultimately to Alabama - where he built a reputation for his strong work ethic, quick wit, and kind heart. He spent many years as a chef at several high-end restaurants and resorts, where he shared his culinary talents and brought joy to countless people through his food. Later, he worked as a millwright, traveling for long stretches on the road and dedicating himself to his craft with the same pride and precision he brought to every aspect of his life.
Jim was known for his big heart, his care for others, and his unmistakable sense of humor. He liked to have a good time and lived life fully, on his own terms.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Bemis, whom he married in 2007, and together they shared many wonderful years in Alabama. He is also survived by his children, Dallas Bemis and Kaci Bemis; his grandson, Killian Bemis; and his granddaughter, Sela Franduto. Additional survivors include his brother, Tim (Kelly) Bretag; his sister, Kim Bretag; and his brothers-in-law, Alan (Pam) Randall, David (Cindy) Randall, and Don Randall.
Jim leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including Justin Bretag, Kara Krueger (Bretag), Kilene (Alex) Spicer (Feely), Kassi Bretag, Paige Thuente, Christina Randall, Will Randall, Austin Randall, Zachary Randall, Cory Randall, Trent Randall, Derek Sizemore, and Amanda Randall Lefan, along with others who loved him dearly.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his late wife, Donna Jean "Jeannie" Sykes Bretag, whom he married in 1997. Jim and Jeannie shared many wonderful years together and remained happily married until her passing in 2005.
In keeping with his generous spirit, Jim donated his body to science through the University of South Alabama Anatomical Gifts Program, where donations may also be made in his memory.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor Jim's memory and the many lives he touched.
Jim will be remembered for his humor, kindness, and the way he made those around him feel valued and loved. His family and friends take comfort in knowing he lived life exactly the way he wanted - with laughter, love, and a full heart.
