James Albert Brockenbrough, MD was born in Philadelphia on October 8, 1946. He was an outstanding high school student and was awarded a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, DC.
At Howard, "Brock" (as his friends called him) became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and excelled in his pre-med studies. He met and married Celia. The marriage produced two sons, Chayo and Tendaye.
In 1968, he entered the Howard University College of Medicine. After his graduation, he completed his surgery residency at the U.S. Public Hospital in San Francisco and went on to become a Fellow in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.
At the invitation of his classmate Dr. Ewart Brown, former Premier of Bermuda. Brock moved to Los |Angeles in 1973 and opened a practice in Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery. The practice thrived as Brock busily performed surgery at four hospitals in the Los Angeles area.
In 1998, Brock became the first Board-Certified Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgeon to open a practice in Bermuda.
When he arrived on the island there was a grave concern about the number of amputations being performed because of poor blood circulation in the legs and feet of diabetic patients. Brock accepted the challenge to reduce the number of amputations by using a technique which restored blood flow to the extremities.
After one year there as a 30% reduction in the number of amputations performed! This meant that dozens of Bermudians had escaped the dreaded experience of losing their legs, because Brock used his special skills to serve the community.
In 2005, Brock and his wife Brenda left Bermuda and headed to her hometown of Kansas City.
There Brock continued to practice surgery and enjoy mid-western life. In 2023, he begun to downsize his practice and was active until his passing on March 11, 2025.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday March 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel 1800 East Linwood Blvd. KCMO 64109. Interment: Leavenworth National Cemetery Monday March 31, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. Visitation: 10-11:00 a.m. at the Chapel. Arrangements entrusted to Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapels.
