James Charles Broughton, 83, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Saturday, December 20, 2025. He was a devoted son, brother, husband and father.
Charles was born on April 20, 1942 in Brunson, South Carolina to Freddie and Margaret Broughton. He later moved to New Jersey, where he attended Henry Snyder High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. He completed his post-secondary education in Estill, South Carolina.
Known affectionately as "Charles" and as "Tuda" during childhood, he was a dedicated and hardworking man throughout his life. In 1970, Charles began his career as a bus driver with the Public Service Bus Company (New Jersey Transit). He also served faithfully in ministry, first as an Associate Minister under the leadership of Apostle Arturo Skinner at Deliverance Evangelistic Center, and later as an Elder under the leadership of Overseer Frederick Broughton at Trinity Deliverance Tabernacle.
After returning to South Carolina in 1979, Charles continued his commitment to community service in several roles, including Assistant Chief of Police wiht the Estill Police Department and Deputy Sheriff in Hampton County. He also owned and operated a delivery trucking business and found joy in supporting youth at Coastal Center in Ladson, South Carolina, under the South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
In April 1990, Charles and his family returned to New Jersey. He later relocated to Easton, Pennsylvania. in March 2001, where he worked as a medical transportation van driver with Easton Coach until retiring in January 2013 at the age of 70.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Aljetta Hagan Broughton of Savannah, Georgia; daughters: Chimene L. Broughton Manns (Kevin Manns) of Whitehall, Pennsylvania, Amanda L. Broughton-Patterson (Vincent Patterson) of Savannah, Georgia, Miriam Y. Broughton (Harry Simpson) of College Park, Georgia, and Chyvonne R. Simuel of Elgin, South Carolina; one son, Charles Antwan Robinson of Chattanooga, Tennessee; brothers: Frederick Broughton (Marilyn Broughton) of Wake Forest, North Carolina and George Broughton of Florida; sisters: Altomese Jenkins of Whitehall, Pennsylvania and Chy'Vonne Cooper of Stone Mountain, Georgia; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, dedication to public service, and deep love for his family.
