James Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pierschbacher Funeral Homes - Knoxville on Jan. 7, 2026.
James Robert "J.R." Brown, 83, of Knoxville, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on January 5, 2026. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
James was born on October 5, 1942, to Lester and Emma (Norton) Brown. He grew up in the Lawler area and attended Turkey Valley High School, graduating in 1961.
After high school, James began his working life, helping at his parents' bar in Lawler before going on to drive truck and later work at Firestone, specializing in heavy machinery tires. He eventually joined Pumps Tire, where he worked until his retirement in 2015.
James was married to Judy Haynes ( McChessney) in 1965 and later married Bonnie Lortz 1980.
A true outdoorsman at heart, James had a deep and lifelong love for hunting and fishing. Whether in the quiet of the woods or out on the water, he was most at peace outdoors. He made many memorable mule deer hunting trips to Wyoming and treasured his fishing adventures in Canada. He was also a founding member of the Rod Benders Bass Club, where he enjoyed not only the sport of fishing but also the camaraderie and lasting friendships that came with it.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Emma Brown, and his son, Robert Brown.
James is survived by his children, Susan (Clarke) Beavers and Mike (Anita) Brown; stepchildren, Mindy Carr and Katie Anderson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Ann Smith; and cousins, Kevin Brown and Joe Brown.
He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of the outdoors, and the many stories and memories shared with family and friends. To send flowers to the family of James "J.R.", please visit our floral store.
