Friends are invited to greet the family from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, before the Mass at the church in Lawler.

Melvin Leonard Balk was born on July 8, 1944, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Leo and Evelyn (Bouska) Balk. Melvin was a lifelong resident of the area, a devoted Christian, and a pillar of the agricultural community.

After graduating from Turkey Valley High School, Melvin threw himself into the work he loved most, farming. He joined forces with his twin brother, and together they worked the family land with a passion and dedication that was evident to all who knew them. Melvin's love for farm life was not only a career but a calling. He took great joy in caring for livestock, tending to the crops, and being an excellent steward of the land. His commitment to the earth was unwavering, and he invested his heart and soul into nurturing the soil and ensuring that it would remain fertile and productive for generations to come.

Melvin's connection to the land extended beyond his own farm. He possessed a particular fondness for attending farm sales, where he would often be found bidding on old equipment. His knack for refurbishing these pieces of agricultural history was well known, and he took pride in breathing new life into machinery that others might have overlooked. Alongside this, Melvin was an avid collector of Ertl toy tractors, a hobby that reflected his deep appreciation for farming heritage and his ever-youthful spirit.

Those who knew Melvin can attest to his handy nature. There was hardly a problem he couldn't fix or a task he wouldn't tackle. This skill was a testament to his understanding of the intricacies of farm machinery and his resourceful approach to life's challenges.

Melvin's Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and providing comfort and strength throughout his years. He lived his beliefs through his actions, showing kindness, generosity, and a willingness to help others at every opportunity.

A man of simple tastes, Melvin enjoyed good food accompanied by a refreshing can of soda. He relished in the company of others and could often be found engaging in lively conversations on a myriad of topics. His love for a good chat was only rivaled by his love for the land, making him a beloved figure in the community.

Melvin's legacy is one of dedication, hard work, and a profound respect for the natural world. His life was a testament to the values he held dear, and he will be remembered as a man who lived with purpose and joy.

Melvin is survived by one sister, Marvelene Schmitt of Fort Atkinson, IA; one sister-in-law, Neoma Balk of Waucoma, IA; along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe, Allen, and Marvin Balk; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Schmitt and Jene Smith.
