James “Bullet” H. Allen, 77, of Lewis Center, OH, and formerly of Augusta, GA, passed away on November 4, 2025, at the Inn at Bear Trail assisted living residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born on June 11, 1948, in Bowling Green, KY, the son of the late Henry “H.B.” and Sarah (Rowe) Allen. He was a 1967 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County High School in Augusta, GA, and a 1971 graduate of Augusta College, where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration. Upon graduation, he was employed as a controller for the Borden Dairy Company for over 25 years. He also worked as a controller for TRW and ConAgra Foods, retiring in 2017.
James was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, and Columbus Blue Jackets. But his most diehard loyalty belonged to the Georgia Bulldogs football team. Family and friends knew not to call James on Bulldogs’ game days! Every year, on July 4, he would announce to his wife, Tina, that the Bulldogs season was “just six weeks away!”
James was also an avid golfer and fan of the game. Growing up in Augusta, he and his family acquired tickets to the Masters Tournament in 1972 and faithfully attended every year until 2019. He had many fond memories watching legendary players on the beautiful, majestic grounds of Augusta National Golf Club.
James lived his life simply, spending time with loved ones and showing deep affection to everybody. He was an amazing grandfather who loved his granddaughters fiercely. When they were toddlers, you’d always find James on the floor playing with them and enjoying every moment. James also loved playing board games with family and was especially competitive at Mexican Train. He also treasured his beloved dogs, Molly Allen, Georgia Belle Allen, and Buddy Allen.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tina (Kanode) Allen; daughters Katie (Daniel) Tavens of Lewis Center, OH, and Kerrie (Bob) Dawson of Westerville, OH; former spouse Mary Jane Barrentine of Augusta, GA, and their daughters Lynne Bell of Appling, GA, and Kay (Brian) Chapman of Huntsville, AL; and brothers Ralph (Patti) Allen of Greensboro, NC, and Eddie (Jayne) Allen of Augusta, GA. Also surviving are nieces Anna Katharine Wilkerson, Jordan Allen and Sarah Lauren Allen; nephew Ben Allen; and granddaughters Hannah Tavens, Sydney Tavens, Beatrice Dawson and Nora Dawson. He was preceded in death by his parents H.B. and Sarah, and son-in-law Doug Bell.
Arrangements are being handled by Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions of Powell, OH. A graveside service will be held on December 5, 2025, at Westover Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, GA. The family would like to thank Generation Healthcare of Newark, OH, the staff of the Inn at Bear Trail, and James’ daughter Katie Tavens for the deep and affectionate care he received in his final months.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the CSRA Humane Society of Augusta, GA.
