James Burger Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 15, 2025.
James "Jim" M. Burger, 87, of Rockford, IL, went to be with the Lord on December 10th, 2025. Born in Oregon, IL, on March 28th, 1938, to his parents, Merle L. Burger and Ruth I. Moody. Jim married the love of his life, Sue, in 1994, in Rockford, and together they spent 31 years. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy.

Jim retired from Northern Illinois University after 21 years as a stationary fireman in the boiler department. Jim learned all his training while serving in the Navy. He truly enjoyed reminiscing and talking about his time working for NIU.

Jim was a loyal Dodgers fan for years and would always wear his Dodgers hat to show his support. Whether they win or lose (preferably win), he was constantly cheering them on whenever they played. Jim loved spending time with his family, and especially his dog Tucker. He would have Alexa play "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window," and they would sing and bark to the song. Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to give special thanks and recognition to the medical personnel who served Jim over the past 6 years, to all the friends who drove him to appointments, and to Kevin, for your friendship and dedication to Jim.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sue Burger; children, Pam, Carol, Michael, and Sheena; stepchildren, Keith, Kristy, and Kirk; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 29; brothers, Neil and Bill Burgers; and dog, Tucker. Predeceased by his parents, Merle Burger and Ruth Moody; children, Merle and Cibby; brother, Jack Burger.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at Berean Baptist Church, 5626 Safford Rd, Rockford, IL, 61101, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Willwood Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Berean Baptist Children's Bus Outreach Program.
