Predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Norma Burns, and his sister Maureen Flaherty. Beloved husband of 38 years to Laurie (Kinmond) Burns and a devoted father of his children, Joseph, Jacob and Jack Burns; grandchildren Jackson, Cate and Colton Burns; sisters, Lauren (Patrick) Bates and Kathleen (Richard) Russo, brother, Patrick (Carrie) Burns, sister, Mary Beth (Michael) Nally; sister-in-law, Monica (Scott) Reis, brother-in-law, Ben (Heather) Kinmond; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jim graduated from SUNY Brockport, where he played football and earned his BS and MS Ed in Physical Education. He was a physical educator and coach of the Rochester City School District for over 30 years. He was head coach of football and softball and had a passion for lacrosse. He was a mentor to many through his teaching and coaching.
Jim spent his summers painting houses. Then after long, hot days of painting, he loved being in the backyard listening to his favorite 80s music and enjoying the pool.
He had the kindest heart and was always willing to lend assistance and offer his handy skills on a project. After retirement, Jim and Laurie enjoyed volunteering with the American Red Cross and traveling.
Friends may call Friday, November 7 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home, 1411 Vintage Lane, Rochester, NY, 14626. Funeral service will take place at Bartolomeo & Perotto on Saturday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Red Cross in his memory.

Dear Laurie,
I am so sorry to hear that your dear husband, Jim, has passed away. I send you my deepest condolences and my heartfelt prayers. It has been a lifetime since we spent together as young dreamers, but it is a joy to know that you have had a wonderful life with a beautiful family. It was also a surprise to see that Jim´s sister, Maureen was a friend of mine through St. Charles, where I taught. It is a small world. I pray that you will find peace in the wonderful memories you shared. I miss you, my old friend.
I will not be able to attend as I have just had surgery, but I will keep you in my prayers.
