James D. Campbell, Jr., 83, died on August 22, 2025 at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where he had resided for the past 6 years.
He was born on September 15, 1941, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Margaret H. and J. Duncan Campbell. Jim is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Campbell; daughter Beth and husband David Fine; son J. Duncan Ill and wife Kristen; and grandsons Kenneth Fine as well as James IV and Brooks Campbell. Jim was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Campbell.
A graduate of The Harrisburg Academy, the former John Harris High School class of 1958, and Cornell University class of 1962, Jim played football at all three schools. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and while at Cornell served as president of the New York Alpha Chapter. He was also cadet commander of the Cornell Army ROTC battalion. Commissioned in 1962, he served three years on active duty in the army Judge Advocate General's Corps and continued as an army reserve officer, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1990.
Jim was retired from the law firm of Caldwell and Kearns P. C. He received his law degree from Dickinson School of Law in 1965 and was a member of the Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and District of Columbia Bar Associations, serving a 4-year term on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board hearing committee.
A long-time resident of Camp Hill, Jim had been a member of the Camp Hill School Board where he served as president. He was a member of Camp Hill Presbyterian Church and served there as an elder. Jim's love of the outdoors was a vital part of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially his many salmon fishing trips to Alaska.
A funeral service will be held at Camp Hill Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Donald E. Potter officiating. Family visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held following the church service at 1:30 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Myers-Baker Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.

Yesterday

My condolences to the family of Colonel Campbell. I didn't know him, but as an ROTC cadet at Cornell, Class of '64, I was in the ranks on drill days when he would have been in the command position. I see that he, too, got a deferment of active duty to attend law school. I did not switch my branch to JAGC, but was an assigned member of a division JAG office in Vietnam, due to a shortage of JAG defense lawyers. I salute a fellow Cornellian for his active and well-lived life. GBR.
