James Alexander Carter Sr., age ninety-five, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. James was born in St. Albans, West Virginia on June 15, 1929, to Cordell Carter and Mary Rumley. He was a graduate of Elkhorn High School, Elkhorn, West Virginia, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Mary A. Preston. He remained married to Mary until her death seventy-three years later. James and Mary had five loving children James Jr., Ronnie, Larry, Frank and Anita.

James was a veteran of the Korean War where he served honorably from 1950-1953. He worked for the United States Postal Service for thirty years. He retired from the Postal Service January 1984. He began pastoring at Lincoln Park Community Baptist Church in 1972 and retired in 2000. He valued the Lincoln Park Community and worked with the children and single mothers in an effort to improve their lives and the community as a whole.

Pastor Carter was active in the Mount Calvary Association where he tutored young ministers to equip them for ministry. He was a true Shepherd to his local flock and a visionary moving them from worshipping in a laundry mat to a residential house to the erecting of a beautiful church building that symbolizes his legacy to the community and to the church.

Upon his retirement from the ministry he spent over twenty years as a care-giver for his wife Mary. He enjoyed garage sales, playing with his grandchildren all while remaining a mentor to young deacons, pastors and children in the community.

James was preceded in death by his wife Mary Carter, his parents Cordell and Mary Carter, his sons James Jr. and Ronnie Carter.

James is survived by his children Carolyn, Larry, Anita and Frank(Cheryl); his sisters Gwen (Dave), Lorraine (Dell) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and church friends.
