In Loving Memory of James Lamar Carter
November 11, 1946 – February 17, 2026
James Lamar Carter, a man of profound faith, integrity, and unbreakable consistency, went home to be with his Savior on February 17, 2026. Known by all as a true "Man of God," James lived his life with a quiet strength and a moral compass that never wavered. He firmly believed that his salvation came from the Lord alone; he leaned on that promise every day, and being a child of God was the ultimate source of his hope and joy. To those who knew him best, his presence and his witness were as reliable as the rising and setting of the sun.
Jimmy grew up in
Lakeview, Georgia and attended Philadelphia Baptist Church with his family, where the foundation of his faith was laid. He suffered the loss of his father when he was only in his early twenties, a tragedy that shaped him into the man of honor he became. He was a faithful caretaker of his mother and his family, stepping into a role of leadership and protection that he would maintain for the rest of his life.
James proudly served his country as a flight engineer in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, a role that defined his disciplined approach to life. His service took him to all seven continents, and he was a proud member of the Arctic Circle, a rare and distinguished achievement. That same spirit carried over into his personal passions; in his younger years, he was a force on the rink, earning the title of Southeast Roller Skating Champion. Whether he was casting a line while fishing, cheering during a NASCAR race, or sharing his legendary sense of humor, James brought the light of the Lord into every room. He served his church family as deacon and treasurer for many years. Many in the community were the quiet beneficiaries of his immense generosity, as he lived out the biblical calling to serve others.
While he achieved much, James's greatest earthly pride was his family. He was the world's best grandfather, making it a priority to spend meaningful time every single week with each of his grandchildren, sharing both his stories and his faith. As a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he modeled what it truly meant to live with honor and grace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James William Carter and Edith Merle Bise; and his sister, Joyce Elaine Johnson.
He is survived by his children, Karin (Carter) and Mike Hughes, Joshua, and Nancy (Young) Carter; his grandchildren, Raina, Chanler, Cade, Gus, Bea, Henry, and Lu; and his great-grandchildren, Micah and Kallie. He also leaves behind his former wife and lifelong friend, Roxie Haynes; his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Cindy Carter; and many nieces and their families.
Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate a life well-lived on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 11:00a.m.- 1:00p.m., at Lane Funeral Home, 833 Chickamauga Avenue,
Rossville, GA 30741.
A service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1:00p.m. in the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.
James Lamar Carter stood tall in his faith and left the world better than he found it. He will be deeply missed, but we find comfort knowing he is resting in the arms of the Lord, and his legacy of integrity will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
