James "Jim" Collier, aged 90, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away on February 10, 2026. Born on September 14, 1935, in Pennsylvania, Jim led a life filled with accomplishments, love, and service. He was a dedicated educator who touched the lives of many students during his 18 years as a beloved biology teacher in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he also served as the Chairman of the Science Department. His commitment to fostering a love of learning extended beyond the classroom, as he was also a passionate football and basketball coach.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Jim brought the discipline and values instilled in him during his military service into every aspect of his life. After being an educator, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a Boeing Executive for 25 years, a role that allowed him to further exemplify his leadership and innovative spirit.
Jim's educational journey was marked by his pursuit of knowledge, graduating from McKees Port, PA High School. He continued his education with degrees from the University of Missouri, University of Indiana, and the University of Syracuse, culminating in a Master's of Science degree that underscored his commitment to the field of education.
In 2006, Jim moved to Abingdon, Virginia, where he not only continued his professional pursuits but also became an integral member of the Cleveland Evangelical Presbyterian Church. He had a passion for fishing, often finding joy and solace in this beloved hobby. Throughout his life, he cherished being an author, publishing several books that reflected his rich experiences and insights.
His family will remember him not only for his achievements but for the love and support he provided throughout their lives. He is survived by his son, Dr. Jim Collier, and his wife Caitlin; his siblings, Paul Collier, Richard Collier, and Barbara Hampson and her husband Auggie; his grandchildren, Logan and Cole Collier; and several nieces and nephews who brought joy to his life.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Rachel Dudley Collier; his devoted wife, Juanita Ellen Hart Collier; and his siblings, Edward Collier and Clifford Collier.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on February 28, 2026, at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel in Abingdon, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Committal will take place at the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with military honors provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia Army National Guard. Rev. Rick Laney will officiate. A reception with the family will follow the committal service at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
