James "Jay" Commons passed on March 18, 2025. Age 76. Of Laurel Springs, Devoted Husband of Deborah. Beloved father of Stephanie (Brian), Tricia (Pete), Christopher (Sylvia), and Rebecca (Matthew). Loving grandfather of Brian, Emma, Paxton, Teighan, and Maverick. Beloved brother of William and Brian. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents James Sr. and Jean and his brother Kevin.
James enlisted in the US Army as a Military Police Officer during the Vietnam War stationed in Saigon; then finishing his obligation in Brooklyn NY doing AWOL apprehension (1971-1974). After being discharged from Active duty James joined the Army Reserves Drill Sergeant Unit serving at Fort Dix and Camden. In 1981 he received a Direct Commission to 2nd LT. After 35 years of service, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
James moved from his hometown of Sea Girt to take an intern position with the Federal Government in contract administration at RCA/L3 in Camden. He purchased his first home in Glendora before moving to Glen Oaks with his wife, Deborah. Here they raised their 4 children. He was no stranger to this area as he had previously attended the Mother of the Savior Seminary in Blackwood, now Camden County College. Jay, as he was known around town, became an active coach, umpire, and referee for Gloucester Township athletics for many years - always looking to teach his children and their friends the value of hard work.
His family says that everywhere they go, Jay is bound to know someone. When James was convinced to fully retire from work, he became a full-time Grandpop. Even in his final days he was insistent on teaching the grandchildren to swim correctly in the ocean, just as he taught his own children.
There will be a viewing Sunday March 23, from 5pm to 7pm and Monday Morning 9:30am to 10:30am at GARDNER FUNERAL HOME, RUNNEMEDE. Funeral Mass 11 am at Holy Child Parish - St. Teresa's Church. Interment St, Joseph's Cemetery, Chews. Landing. MAR 20
