James Crossin Obituary

James Crossin

James D. Crossin, affectionately known to many as Jim, passed away peacefully in Franklin Township, surrounded by his three girls, his wife Edith and his daughters Michele and Mary Theresa. His family and good friends all got to talk to him the day before and share some good stories before starting comfort care.

Born on November 5, 1936, in Coaldale, a son to John and Agnes (Smith) Crossin. Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, kindness and a warm, friendly nature that endeared him to all who knew him.

Jim proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War, a chapter of his life that spoke to his deep sense of patriotism and duty. After his military service, he embarked on a longstanding career, eventually retiring as a supervisor of the Change House at the former New Jersey Zinc Company. His work ethic and leadership were admired by his colleagues and served as an inspiration to many.

A man of faith, Jim was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jim Thorpe. His commitment to his community was unwavering, demonstrated through his active involvement in various capacities. He served on the Jim Thorpe Borough Council for eight years, the zoning board for three years and the police commission for another three years. His civic engagement was a testament to his desire to contribute positively to the world around him.

Jim's interests and hobbies were a reflection of his multifaceted personality. A lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) for 30 years, he cherished these associations. In 2009, he was honored as the aid to the grand marshal of the Irish Parade in Jim Thorpe, a role he held with great pride. He was an active member of the Jim Thorpe Memorial Park Commission, where he served on many committees for the youth and senior citizens.

Jim's creative spirit shone through in his woodworking, as he enjoyed crafting whimsical whirligigs that brought joy to those who received them.

Jim's legacy is lovingly cherished by his wife, Edith (Warner) Crossin; daughters, Michele Swedar and her husband Ronald of Lehighton, and Mary Theresa Crossin of Jim Thorpe; granddaughter, Jeanine Swedar Jones and her husband Josh of Jim Thorpe; great-grandchildren, Keegan Swedar, Phoebe Swedar, and Hannah Wollweber; and four nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret (Margie) Crossin Sipko, and a cherished grandson, Chad Swedar, who passed in 2018.

James D. Crossin will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. His kind and friendly demeanor touched the lives of many, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jim Thorpe at 11 a.m. Calling hour 10 a.m. until the time of Mass in church. Interment will follow in Sky View Memorial Park. Hometown.

Our troubled world needs more people like Jim! You are correct when you state in his obituary "his civic engagement was a testament to his desire to contribute positively to the world around him." I fondly remember his involvement with the Memorial Park Commission, making it possible for hundreds of youth from the Greater Jim Thorpe Area to enjoy dances, roller skating, and other activities at the Park. But what I really remember about him is how he treated me as a young man-always with a kind word, an interest in what and how I was doing, and with a genuine respect for me. That was 50 years ago. When I saw him at Knoebles recently he treated me the same way. Wow! That instantly showed me how sincere he was. Enjoy your heavenly reward good and faithful servant!
