James David Dames, born September 23, 1955, in
Chicago, IL, passed away in his
Buda, Texas, home on December 5, 2025. He was the cherished son of Alice nee (Ustelas) and Joseph Dames.
Known to most as Jim, he was a beloved husband to Mary nee (Salerno), devoted father to Michael Christopher Dames and Nicole Violet Vierneisel, proud father-in-law to Eric Vierneisel. He was an adoring grandfather to Madison, Makayla, Kai and Eva, and fun-loving uncle to Lee, Brad, Brian, David, Diana, Judy, Christine, and John. Jim was predeceased by his siblings: Diane Whitacre. Roy Dames and Don Dames.
Jim's life was defined by service, generosity, and a deep commitment to community. Raised in Cicero, Illinois, he was an active member of Our Lady of the Mount Parish from a young age-first as an altar boy and later as president of the parish Jaeger Club. His early dedication to leadership and advocacy continued through his academic years at Morton College. There, he served as President of the Student Senate and Student Representative on the Board of Trustees. One of his proudest accomplishments during that time was helping to give students a voice in the planning and development of Morton College's first-ever campus.
Throughout his life, Jim remained deeply engaged in civic activity. In his younger days, Jim was a member of the Young Democrats and the LaGrange Area Jaycees, contributing to community service projects that addressed local needs. His professional career spanned over three decades in the hospitality industry-21 of those years spent as a respected business owner in Western Springs. His neighborhood restaurant became more than just a place to eat; it was a cornerstone of the community where Jim offered local students their first jobs and cultivated lasting friendships with patrons.
Later in life, Jim found fulfillment as a school bus driver for Darien School District 61. His warmth and steady presence made him a beloved figure among students and staff alike.
In 2024, Jim retired and relocated to
Buda, Texas, where he embraced a new chapter with enthusiasm. He treasured the time spent with his daughter Nicole and her family and immersed himself in hobbies such as fishing, bocce ball, and art. True to his nature, he quickly became an integral part of the Creekside community-introducing new activities for residents and assisting with their transportation needs.
Jim's generous spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered not only for what he did but for how he did it-with patience and kindness.
A visitation to celebrate Jim's life will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 8404 S. Cass Avenue in
Darien, Illinois, followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 am.
Jim will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, but in his own words: "This is all part of the journey." May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
