After a long battle with cancer, James "Jim" Hartenberg Dolsen Sr., 85, of South Range, WI, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, March 31, 2024.
He was born in the Township of Oakland WI, to Ray Dolsen and Lila (Eckert) Dolsen. He married Fran Roberts on August 6, 1960.
Jim graduated from East High School in Superior, WI, in 1958. After a series of diverse job experiences, he found his true calling at the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS). Over the course of 30 years, Jim dedicated himself to the Facilities Maintenance Department, leaving an indelible mark through his innovative contributions. His inventive prowess led to the creation of a straight blade lawnmower invention utilized on campus, for which he received a State Merit Award. Jim's exemplary work ethic also earned him recognition as an outstanding employee at UWS, culminating in his retirement in 1999. His commitment to innovation and excellence left a lasting impact on his workplace, where his dedication and contributions were highly valued.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim's life was characterized by his unwavering dedication to community and mentorship. He spent countless hours coaching numerous little league baseball and basketball teams, embodying the virtues of generosity and guidance. Jim's legacy of selflessness and wisdom served as a beacon for those around him, exemplifying a life of enduring dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of others. Yet, at the heart of Jim's remarkable journey lay his profound connection to the land he farmed since childhood. His family's farm provided the fertile ground from which his values of appreciation for life blossomed. Whether caring for his animals, nurturing his family, or extending hospitality to all who crossed his path, Jim's stewardship of the land mirrored his nurturing spirit, ensuring that all who visited left nourished, both in body and in soul.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, sister Eileen Lewis, brother Alan Dolsen, and grandson Alex Pfannebecker.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Fran, brothers Charles (Mary Jean) and Warren (Lois) Dolsen, his sister Esma Dzikonski, his four children James (Laurie) Dolsen Jr. of South Range, Robin (Joe) Paxton of Superior, WI, Vicky Holm of South Range, WI. Matthew (Michelle) Dolsen of South Range, WI. Along with his grandchildren, Holly Paxton, Laurisa Pfannebecker, Jamie (Christina) Holm, Joe (Amanda) Paxton, Jay (Cassie) Paxton, Justine (John) Greely, Eric (Devon) Dolsen, Makenzie (Trent) Gustafson, Abby Dolsen, Jocelyn Dolsen, 14 great-grandchildren, Aaliyah, Cierra, Owin, Anora, Valerie, Logan, Kaylea, Clayton, Kieran, Jethro, Kaisen, Grayson, Camden, Bode, and 1 great-great grandchild, Caiden.
The family would like to thank St. Mary's hospice team and special thank you to Jeannie Glinski, Dr. Kebbekus and his Oncology team, and Dr. Prabhu and his Infectious Disease team for their great care and loving support.
A celebration of life will be held from 2:00-5:00 PM on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at the Parkland Town Hall, 6221 E. Veterans Pkwy., South Range, WI, with a prayer service to be held at 3:00 PM.
