James Michael Dougan

On October 15, 1950 James Michael Dougan was born to James Adam and Gertrude Broer Dougan. Surrounded by family on December 9, 2023, Mike passed away in Arizona from heart and lung disease at the age of 73.
Mike grew up in Hubbard, Iowa – one of six children. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church. Mike was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church in Glendale, AZ and was ministered to by Rev. Daniel Larson. He attended and graduated in 1968 from Hubbard High School and then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He was an avid sports fan and loved playing baseball, football, and basketball, although baseball was his passion.
Mike's life in Hubbard was filled with family and many, many friends, who called him Jack.
In 1981, Mike journeyed to Arizona to see if he could find relief from his seasonal allergies. He settled there for the remainder of his life. He worked and made new friends. His passion for baseball continued as he and his high school friend, LeRoy Meister, enthusiastically supported the Arizona Diamondbacks. When his parents retired and then spent many winters in Arizona, Mike was thrilled to have family so close. Mike and Dad (Jim) spent the winter of 1985 building Mike's house in Glendale, AZ, where he lived until his death.
We, Mike's family, want to thank two special people in Mike's life who helped him through his medical struggles. Lloyd Pritchard, his renter for several years, who has said he "loved Mike as a brother." He was the one taking Mike to the hospital or calling 911. Sandy Mathews Prins, our dear cousin, accepted the role as Mike's advocate. Living nearby, she was always by his side for doctor appointments and hospital stays.
Those left to miss Mike like crazy are his brother Kevin and Rita Dougan, Ames, IA, and his four sisters, Carole and Ted Minnick, Lakeville, MN; Darla and Dave Friest, Belle Plaine, MN; Renae Dougan, Radcliffe, IA; and Kelly and Kenny Kyle, Nevada, IA. Mike's memory will also be cherished by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gertrude (Broer) Dougan.
