James Downey Obituary James H. Downey, 80, of Westville Indiana, passed away peacefully in Michigan City, Indiana, on December 21, 2023. He was born on July 21, 1943 in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania to Charles and Helen (Cislo) Downey. On May 25, 1963, he married Karen Lee Check who survives. Also surviving are his children James Downey of Valparaiso, John (Lisa) Downey of Union Mills, and Carrie (Michael) Hardesty of Union Mills; six grandchildren- Johnny, Joe, Jenna, James, Ashley and Michael. One great grandson; Jack. His brothers Ray (Jean) Downey of Westville and Arky (Iris) Downey of Elyria, Ohio also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters; Charlie, Bill, Mort, Sis and Jean. Jim enjoyed many years of hunting with his sons and brothers. He also enjoyed knife making, working with his metal lathe and carpentry by building his home as well as his sons. Jim was a master troubleshooter as there was no problem he could not solve. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and could be counted on to provide guidance and knowledge to anyone in need. Jim was a well respected union electrician and worked for National Steel Corporation (Midwest Division) in Portage, Indiana for 42 years before retiring in 2003. Graveside Services will be held at Chesterton Cemetery at 12 Noon on Saturday March 16, 2024. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday March 16, 2024 from 1-6 PM at The Moose Lodge in Chesterton. Donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation. Newhard Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. He will be dearly missed.
