I just want to pass along my deepest sympathies to Jim's Family...He was a great Teacher and touched everyone deeply with his knowledge of the world especially when he shared it in his english classes... I truly enjoyed his class and will always have the memories of his stories that he told in those classes...

My sincere sympathies and condolences to Professor Doyle's Family.

During my years at Lyndon I had the pleasure of taking several elective classes with Professor Doyle. He was everything a teacher should be. I learned so much more from him, than just literature. He had a sense of humor that made even the most boring books more interesting and fun. His smile would always light up the room. No day in class with him was ever the same. He was my favorite teacher in my years at Lyndon. I will always remember him with a smile.

I had class with Jim at Lyndon in the Fall of 1980, when we had both just started there. Jim was a treat. He was a tough professor, but funny. He told us he dreamed of changing his name to Guido Cavalkante. That, he said, was a name... not “Jim Doyle.” But Jim, my friend, what is a name? It is an empty collection of letters that we fill with meaning. And look what you did with Jim Doyle. Look how full. Look how rich. I asked myself “What made Jim Doyle special.” My most immediate answer was ‘he knew what love was, and he knew how to show it.’ Jim filled his days with loving intent. I will miss you Jim.

Dear Ellen;

My sympathies and condolences, Like many, I consider Jim the greatest teacher I had the pleasure of working with at LSC. He's of the smartest and wisest men I've known. I may not have always been his favorite - I know one time he said to me, "You're kind of freaky and need to get over it" - but he always has been mine. The only comfort that can be offered is that there are so many who will never forget his sneakers, his love of "Law and Order", and need to have all bribes in the form of Junior Mints.

Voltaire may have been talking about someone else, but I really want to say this in closing about Jim:

"For if true greatness consists in having received from heaven a mighty genius, and in having employed it to enlighten our own mind and that of others, a man like him, whose equal is hardly found in a thousand years, is the truly great man."

Mr. Doyle was the finest teacher I have ever known. He loved, and was loved by, his students. I will remember his great sense of humor, his compassion, and his fantastic lectures which were not to be missed. I will always be grateful to have been one of his students. The things I learned in his classes still resound within me. I'm sure that I am only one of hundreds of former students who feel as I do.

Jim, I will miss running into you at the hardware store. Thanks for everything.

It goes without saying that Jim was the greatest professor at Lyndon State. It is because of him that I developed a greater love for literature and writing. I remember one day, early in the morning, he spotted me in a vacant classroom and came in to talk to me about a paper he had passed back to me the previous day with a red "R" on it. He said something like, "I push you because I know you can do better." He was right.

There are days when I quote you, Jim, quotes that resonate throughout the course of our lives. Thank you for everything.

Dear Ellen,

God bless you in the days and years ahead.

I went for a walk on Stanton Road in between brief visits to your very crowded house today in Sutton Village (Sunday, 2/27/5), and for the first time this winter saw snow drifts encroaching onto a road in the cross wind, white places where I could make first foot prints. I think Jim is doing that now where he is, with our Lord.

Sincerely yours, Hal

To Ellen, Ben and Josh --

Paul and I wish to extend to all of you our heartfelt sympathy. We would so love to share in the gathering at your home, and Paul would especially like to touch base with Ben, but we will be out of state for the next two or three days.

Paul and I did not get to know Jim personally, but from all we have heard in the community, he was indeed an extraordinary person. Our oldest daughter, Kim, who was a student of his at LSC thought he was wonderful.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Please know that we care.

The last time I spoke with Jim, he was telling me about getting a phone call from Ben in the Peace Corps. We were standing outside Brooks and Jim had me in hysterics as usual!

I know how proud he was of both his

amazing sons, his Grandson, and Ellen.

Jim, you brought joy, laughter, and

love into this world.

That is what we keep.

Paz to you and your family.
