James J. Durning

DURNING, James J. May 20, 2025. Age 92. Beloved husband of the late Joan Durning, for 62 loving years. Loving father of Kathleen Barth, Sherry (Michael) Mozola and the late Lynn Klein. Adored grandfather of Aaron, Jordan, Jonathan, Michael, Adam, Robert, Beth, Stephen, Brianna, Zachary, Jason and Craig. He was a proud great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather of many loving grandchildren. Dear son of the late Lillian Durning.
Jim enjoyed a long career in law enforcement serving many years as Detective Lieutenant for the East Detroit Police Department as well as the Chief of Police for Clay Township. After retiring, James worked for the Macomb County Sheriff as the supervisor of Protective Services for the court.
Jim enjoyed his many hobbies, but always loved traveling and boating. While visiting the family cottage in Harrison, Jim loved the night cruises on the pontoon, scouting for eagle nests on the lake with his family. Jim and Joan spent their winter at their Naples, Florida condo. The highlight was the beach sunsets spent with Joan. Jim also loved a good deal at a garage sale and thrift store.
As a young man, Jim was passionate for music and dancing. He was a self-taught pianist, played trumpet, and in his younger years taught ballroom dancing. Jim kept himself fit throughout the years with daily walks and lake swimming.
Most important to Jim was his loving family, who will miss him greatly.
