James Eaddy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Morris Funeral Home - Hemingway on Dec. 10, 2025.
Columbia, SC

Staff Sergeant James Edward Eaddy, 91, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Columbia, South Carolina. A proud veteran and devoted family man, he leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him.

A son of the late Bennie J and Corrine Hughes Eaddy, James was born on July 17, 1934, in Johnsonville, South Carolina. He graduated from Johnsonville High School before embarking on a distinguished military career that spanned over two decades.

James served honorably in the United States Army from 1952 until his retirement in 1976. After completing basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, James began his service career in Qui Nhon, Vietnam. During his twenty-four years of service, James' work ethic enabled him to rise to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He completed two tours in Vietnam and was also stationed in Germany and Hawaii. James' dedication and bravery were recognized through numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Good Conduct Medal. His commitment to duty and country was unwavering and deeply respected by all who served alongside him.

Beyond his military accomplishments, James was known for his warm heart and generous spirit. He never met a stranger and had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome. A member of Freedom and Liberty Worship Center, he fostered relationships with others through his unwavering faith. An avid reader with a curious mind, James enjoyed reading a good book as much as he did gatherings with loved ones. Above all, he cherished every moment spent with family.

James is survived by his daughter Glenda (Jeff Skinner) Eaddy; son Benjamin Eaddy; grandchildren Mallory (Stuart) Flynn, Basil Owens III, Ashley (Immie) Powell, and Shayne (Heather) Powell; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Alice Rhames Eaddy, and his parents James was preceded in death by son Bailey "Duck" Powell; brother Bedford Eaddy; and sister Lula Beck Coker.

Funeral services for James will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel located at 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, South Carolina. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home, will take in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery, 800 S. Georgetown Highway, Johnsonville, South Carolina, 29555 immediately following the funeral service.
