James T. Eglen, age 83, of Brownstown, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, March 17, 2026, at his home on the farm.

Mr. Eglen was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Church, Medora, for more than ten years.

Jim was employed at Silgan, formerly known as Amoco, for more than forty years before retiring. Later, he and his wife, Sharon, owned and operated Sport About Eglen in Brownstown from 1980 to 1989.

Family was the center of Jim’s life. He loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim also had a passion for raising Quarter Horses and building muzzleloaders, a hobby he enjoyed and proudly shared with his family.

Jim enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting and was a state champion archer. He also loved muzzleloader squirrel hunting and especially enjoyed playing Euchre with friends.

He was a dedicated member of the Jackson County Fair Board and Schneck Medical Center Hospital Board. He served as a Jackson County Commissioner from 1990 to 1994, and was a member of the Medora Masonic Lodge and the NRA.

Born on April 8, 1942, in Seymour, James was the son of Winfield and Juanita (Flinn) Eglen, both of whom preceded him in death. On December 23, 1961, at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Seymour, he married Sharon Wineinger, and she survives in Brownstown.

Survivors also include two daughters: Lisa (Jeff) Ferguson of Brownstown, and Lora (Robert) Kirts of Brownstown; three grandchildren: Lindsay Pray (Seth), Katie Leitzman, and Casey (Lauren) Kirts; seven great-grandchildren: Brock Pray, Abe Pray, Lainey Leitzman, Jacoby Leitzman, Finn Kirts, Liv Kirts, and Callan Kirts; one sister, Donna (Melvin) Gray of Salem; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Eglen was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Bonnie.

A Masonic service for James T. Eglen will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Mt. Zion Church in Medora, followed by the funeral service. Pastor Robert Kirts will officiate. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Mt. Zion Church.

A private graveside service will be held at White River Valley Cemetery on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

Memorials may be given to Mt. Zion Church, Medora.
