James Charles Fleming, 59, of Burlington, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family.
Born April 8, 1966, in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of Harold Wayne and Marlene Sadie DeFosse Fleming. On July 20, 1996, he married Pearl "Missy" Marie Gresham in Long Beach, California. She died on May 2, 2013.
Jim held multiple positions with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs over the course of 35 years, until his retirement.
Jim loved watching football and basketball. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, LA Lakers, and Iowa Hawkeyes. Recently, he began following the WNBA to watch Caitlin Clark. Jim enjoyed traveling and preferred to drive to every destination.
Survivors include his twin daughters, Jakayla Fleming of Burlington and Brionna (Pierce) Ferguson of Mason City; stepson, Alphonso Howard Sr. of Santa Barbara, CA; four grandchildren, Alphonso Howard Jr., Savannah Howard, Malachi Ferguson, and Messiah Ferguson; two brothers, Eric A. (Carol) Fleming of Carman, IL and Thomas W. Fleming of Biggsville, IL; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship.
The funeral service for Mr. Fleming will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship with Pastor Marcus Timmons officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Union Baptist Church Full Gospel Fellowship following the burial.
