James Foster Obituary

James Stephen Foster, 75, of Fernandina Beach went home to be with the Lord on March 6, 2025, at Community Hospice, Warner Center in Fernandina.
Jim leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Martha Ann Foster; sons, Steven Andrew Foster and Matthew Alan Foster (Karina); grandchildren, Andrew William Foster (Mooresville, Tenn.), Josalyn Marie Foster, Amber Nicole Foster and Amaury De La Cruz, all of Fernandina Beach; his mother, Lora Louise Foster (Fernandina); his brother, William (Bill) Robert Foster (Jean); brothers-in-law, Kenny Miller, BJ Miller and Robert Miller; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was born on May 3, 1949, in Leonardtown, Md., to Lora Louise Hardman Foster and the late James Robert Foster. Upon graduation from high school, Jim attended Virginia Tech to pursue an associate's degree in business and finance.
In 1967, while he was attending VT, his family relocated to Jacksonville, Fla. Jim relocated as well and graduated from Jacksonville University with a Bachelor's degree in Business/Finance. He also served in the Army National Guard. After various jobs, he began working for the United States Postal Service in 1976. There he met and fell in love with Martha Miller. Jim and Martha were married on February 15, 1981. They had two sons, Steven Andrew Foster and Matthew Alan Foster.
In 1994, Jim became the Postmaster of Fernandina Beach and moved the family here. As Postmaster, Jim worked to bring the new Post Office on Sadler Road, expanding operations for the rapidly growing community.
Jim was a faithful member of Amelia Baptist Church and an active member in the Nassau Gideons Camp as well as a Leader in Community Bible Study. Jim loved the Lord, and his quiet spirit showed Jesus to others. He was also a member of the Optimist Club in Fernandina.
He enjoyed golfing, painting, gardening, traveling to the mountains of North Carolina, photography and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on April 12, 2025, at Amelia Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Research of your choice, Amelia Baptist Church or the Nassau Gideons Camp.

Jim was a friend and co-worker from 1986 when I got my first position in the budget office. We worked on many projects together and had many a late night. I am sure he will be sorely missed by all friends and family.

Jim was the first person I met when I came from Kansas City to Jacksonville on a temporary detail to the position of Acting Controller. He was the Manager of Budget and Financial Analysis at that time. He was a huge help to me, showing me the way things were done in both Jacksonville and the Southern Region, and introduced me to all the key players and how to best work with them. He acted as a welcome buffer between myself and the District Manager, who had a reputation of being hard to work for. Jim later worked with me in various roles when I got the Controller job permanently in Jacksonville, including his time as Postmaster of Fernandina Beach Jim was a man of many abilities in both support and operations positions and performed all with absolute and unwavering integrity. I always considered Jim an example of a true Christian, who walked the walk as well as talking the talk. Jim will be badly missed by his family, friends, church and community as well as many who considered him both a friend and coworker.

Jim Foster was an outstanding man, great leader, faithful servant to God and his church. I personally worked for Mr. Foster at the Fernandina Beach Post Office for many years as one of his city letter carriers. He was one of the best Postmasters I had the privilege to work for. My wife and I will truly miss him. We wish all the best to his grieving family.
