In 1953, Edward joined the Navy, where he served in the Korean War aboard the USS Walke DD723. Ed then attended the Raymond J Horne School of drafting using his GI Bill to become a carpenter (and he always said he was a pretty good one). He continued his career to become Project Manager and Superintendent on many buildings including hospitals, schools, and churches. Ed retired in 1998 but continued to work on projects throughout the remainder of his life, including completing a split rail fence project to surround his custom-built home, as recently as May of 2021. Ed loved hosting parties, traveling, and serving his community through philanthropy. Ed built a custom bar in his basement, complete with a dance floor, Pecky Cypress bar, pool table, pinball machine, and seating for 65. Ed supported the Children's Hospital of Alabama, The Red Cross, and was a member of the gallon club (many times over) for blood donation because of his universal donor status. Ed and his family traveled extensively, creating great memories and life lessons with every mile through most of the US and parts of Canada. Ed was also an avid motorcycle rider. He held memberships with organized motorcycle groups for over 60 years including tenures with the Dixie Touring Group and the Goldwing Road Riders Association. With the GWRRA, he was a member of Chapter C and served as Treasurer in Birmingham, Alabama. Ed joined the Wings of Phoenix Chapter in Arizona in 1994 until returning to South Carolina in 1998. Upon return, he joined Chapter G out of Charleston, South Carolina and was a dedicated member for the remainder of his life. He loved attending many Chapter and State Rallies all over the country. Ed and his stories will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
