James Eric Gerdes of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on April 25, 2023. James, known to all as Jim, was born to Ivan and Mary Laurel Gerdes, on February 19, 1952 in Mason City, IA.
As a devoted lifelong Catholic, Jim poured himself into his faith, family, friendships and service for others.
Raised on his family's farm, his interest in mechanics at a young age led to a successful career as a mechanical engineer and business owner. Jim worked 41 years in industrial/commercial refrigeration construction and service, while also contributing much of his time to outreach in the community, especially near his South Phoenix business. Jim was also an active member of the horsing community with The Verde Vaqueros and The Western Saddle Club. Horsing was a pastime he enjoyed sharing with friends and family, whom he cherished.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Donna, their six children, Eric Gerdes, Tracie (Matthew) Kraemer, Timothy (Mary) Gerdes, David (Jessica) Gerdes, Frances (Rajesh) Shrestha, Jonathan (Molly) Gerdes, and 11 Grandchildren. He also leaves behind his adored sisters, Anna (Dal) McIntosh, Judy (Tom) Nelson, and Donna (Daryl) Weingart. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ivan and Mary Laurel Gerdes, as well as his brothers, George Gerdes, and Timothy Gerdes.

Remembering Jimmy today. We had lots of fun when we all young and our families got together. He was always smily and so kind

Remembering when we were younger and all of us played games at your family home in Plymouth. We all thought the world of you and were so kind to grandpa and mom in the nursing home. Love and sympathy

Donna and family, We are so deeply sorry about Jim. I know our mom, Darlene, was always so close with the Gerdes family and loved seeing Jim when he would come home. I remember when we were younger he always seemed so gentle and soft spoken. His picture reminds me so much of his dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Jim was one of my best friends; he was full of life 24/7, with joy and love for everyone who enjoyed spending time with him. He had, indeed, a heart of Gold. So kind, gentle, and generous. He was a Heavenly Being living on Earth!!! Love & hugs to you, Donna, and your wonderful family!!! This good man will be missed by many!!! Love you, Jim!!!

I´m so sad to hear of Kim´s passing. Saw him last year at the All School Reunion and was so good to him and Donna together! My memories include a photo from one of the NCHS yearbooks of him running up and down bleachers ( or stairs) to sweat off weight for wrestling! He was a great wrestler! My condolences to Donna, Anna and entire family.
