Mr. James Alex Gillespie, Sr., age 81, of Myrtle Beach, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at his residence. He was born December 28,1943, in Keen Mountain, Virginia, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Irene Gillespie.

Jim is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Connie (Jones); his son, James A. Gillespie, Jr., and wife Anne Taylor Gillespie of Knoxville, TN; his daughter, Sarah Hamilton, and husband Carl Hamilton II of Myrtle Beach, SC; and his four cherished grandchildren: Carl (Trey) Hamilton III, Dallas Hamilton, Brooke Gillespie, and Layla Gillespie.

He is also survived by one brother, Joe Gillespie, and one sister, Ava King. Jim will be forever remembered by his extended family of an aunt, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen Gillespie.

Jim grew up in Buchanan County before moving with his family to Russell County, Virginia, in 1957. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1962. Jim earned his associate's degree from Clinch Valley College, followed by his bachelor's degree in history from Emory & Henry College in 1968. Three years later, he completed his master's degree in history from Radford University.

He dedicated his life to education and service. Jim worked as a pastor, teacher, and principal before becoming the Administrator for Russell County for 33 years. During his tenure, he led numerous community initiatives, earned many prestigious awards, and was instrumental in bringing thousands of new jobs to the county. Jim approached every responsibility with integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Beyond his accomplishments, Jim will be remembered most for his kindness, generosity, and genuine love for people. He was first and foremost a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His presence, wisdom, and compassion will be deeply missed.

Jim was a longtime member of the Elk Garden Methodist Church and continued his devotion in Myrtle Beach as a member of First Presbyterian Church.

In honoring his wishes, a private family service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, or First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach.
