James Hanig Obituary

James "Jim" Hanig, age 81. We are sad to announce the passing of James Hanig.

Beloved husband for 59 years to Barbara Deborah Hanig. Loving father of Eric (Melanie) Hanig and Marni Hanig. Proud grandfather of Jonah, Lily, Emma, Shanti, and Aidan. Dear brother of Thomas Hanig, Peter (Alice) Hanig, and David (Felicia) Hanig.

From Jim's early childhood in Chicago, to growing up in Highland Park and snow birding in Florida, Jim touched so many on his journey through life. Jim was passionate about biking, business, helping others, and most important to him - his family. Jim rode with the same biking group for over 50 years crossing the country from Oregon to DC. Known as "the navigator" Jim always had the next trip planned before the first was finished. Jim's business acumen started in the family shoe business but quickly transitioned into his own company, which he grew into a success direct marketing business. After retiring, Jim did not stop. He put his energy into charity work including helping build a successful college access program, College Bound Opportunities. He was passionate about making the world a better place. Biking and business aside, Jim will tell you his greatest accomplishments in life was marrying his wife, Barbara and having the privilege to raise and enjoy his two children, Eric and Marni, and his five grandchildren: Jonah, Lily, Emma, Shanti, and Aidan. Always up for a bike ride, game of gin (or poker), fishing, or just hanging out. "Dad" and "Poppy" was always there for a good laugh or giant bear hug. There is never a good time to say goodbye to someone so loved, but one thing can be sure: he lived a happy, full life and will be missed dearly.

Please join with us and celebrate his memory at a service this Friday, August 25th, at 12 PM at The Chapel, 8851 Skokie Blvd (at Niles Center Road), Skokie. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed on Jim's page at www.goldmanfuneralgroup.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to College Bound Opportunities, www.cbo4success.org, or JUF, www.juf.org. Info: The Goldman Funeral Group 847-478-1600
