James Hasselberger Obituary
James John Hasselberger, of
Valparaiso, IN, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, December 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born on April 3, 1933, to William and Julia (Duval) Hasselberger. One of 14 children, Jim was raised on a farm in Marshfield, Wisconsin. On January 21, 1961, he married Nancy Megler in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They settled in Calumet City, IL where they lovingly raised their four children: Jodi (Robert) Gass, Cindy (John) Batliner, Cathy (Joseph) Lisac, and James (fiance Jennifer Guelinas) Hasselberger II. Jim will be remembered as a hardworking, family man who always believed that "a poor mans riches are his children."
Jim worked for many years at Cargill, but spent most of his career as a truck driver delivering Strohs beer for Vierks Distributing Co. In his retirement years, he and Nancy did some traveling and enjoyed spending time with their nine grandchildren: Grace Gass and Robbie Gass of
Valparaiso, IN; Johnathan Batliner of South Bend, IN; Catherine (Dave Page) Batliner, of Madison, TN; Brian Lisac of Tempe, AZ; Rebecca Lisac of Silver Spring, MD; Kaitlyn (fiance Kodey Langford) Hasselberger of Michigan City, IN; James Hasselberger III and Peyton Hasselberger of Chesterton, IN.
Jim proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army stationed in Alaska, and was a member of American Legion Post #94 in Valparaiso. He was an amazing handyman who could fix or repair anything, and his knowledge of cars was second to none. He enjoyed a good game of Euchre, spending time in his garden, and in his later years, delighted in a friendly game (or two) of Farkle.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Jim is survived his brother, Alvin Hasselberger of Rhinelander, WI; sisters, Barbara (Richard) Koselke of Dyer, IN; and Alicia Hasselberger and Donna Treder of Muskego, WI; brothers-in-law, Charles Pankin of Menomonee Falls, WI, and John Pankin of West Bend, WI; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy, parents William and Julia, mother and father-in-law, Charles Sr. and Katherine Pankin; brothers Roman (Mary Jean) Hasselberger and Donald (Patricia) Hasselberger; sisters Shirley Arndt, Evelyn (Donald) Durst, Isabelle (Harold) Durst, Monica (William) Vallos, Mary (Willard) Oelrich, and Gladys Barwick; and sisters-in law Vangie Hasselberger, Joan (John) Weber, Arlene (Gary) Gaarder, Katherine (Edward) Stadelmeyer, and Barbara Priest.
