James Earl Heard, lovingly known as “Shake” by his friends, was born on March 26, 1954, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Mary Frances (Haywood) and Willie Anthony Heard. He was born and raised in Altus, attending Lincoln schools, and graduating from Altus High School with the class of ‘72, where he built lifelong memories and friendships. In his youth he attended St. John Baptist church in Altus. Although he spent a few months living in Oklahoma City, Altus was always his true home. He dedicated his career to serving in the Classing Office for the City of Altus.
James was a devoted sportsman from an early age, playing baseball in his youth and carrying his love for the game with him throughout his life. His passion never faded. He was known for calling family bright and early to excitedly share sports statistics and game highlights. He also cherished his time playing dominos with his domino buddies, a favorite pastime that brought him both joy and lifelong friendships. James was an exceptionally smart man, with a remarkable gift for math and a natural talent for working with numbers that far exceeded the ordinary.
Above all, James loved his family deeply. He adored his many nieces and nephews and held each of them close to his heart. He had an incredible memory of birthdays and never missed a chance to remind his family how much he loved them whenever he would call. His sister Clara became his devoted caregiver, graciously giving back the same love he had so freely given to all his siblings. The girls in the family will always fondly remember the special nickname “Blue,” a name he lovingly gave to each of them. Whenever he needed something, you could surely hear him call out with warmth and affection, “Hey, Blue!”
James passed from this life on February 11, 2026, at the age of 71. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his sister, Margaret West; his brother-in-law, Kenneth West; and his three nieces, Aneesha Heard, Tara Heard, and Debra Goggins.
Those left to cherish and honor James’ memory include his brothers, Willie A. Heard, Jr. (Evelyn) of Fresno, California, Jake E. Heard (Jackie) of Tulsa, and Jimmy L. Heard (Iva) of Oklahoma City; his sisters, Mary E. West of Oklahoma City and Clara Heard of Altus; his dear domino buddies; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and other relatives as well as treasured friends who will carry his memory in their hearts always.
